Mortgage Bankers Association’s Annual Convention 2026: Navigating AI Transformation in Mortgage Lending

Mortgage & AI Innovation: Takeaways from the Mortgage Banker Association’s Annual Convention & Expo 2026

Kizen joined the Mortgage Banker Association Conference this week where industry leaders, technology innovators, and compliance experts gathered to share thoughts and ideas around the rapidly evolving role of  AI and technology across mortgage operations and financial services.

Across conversations, keynote presentations, and technical workshops, one theme emerged and stood out in every conversation: the key challenge in AI transformation is no longer whether the technology works, but how lenders can build trust, drive user adoption, and change how the work actually gets done with AI, while maintaining responsible governance and human oversight as the industry evolves.

What Does AI Transformation Mean for Mortgage Leaders?

  • Trust and Adoption Over Pure Capability: Simply deploying AI tools will not guarantee business value. Many enterprises have learned over the past few years that the tools without the right change management and cultural shifts  will not yield long-term ROI. The true benchmark of success with AI lies in change management, continuous training, and helping employees and leaders learn and build trust in new capabilities. Getting people to actually use the tools is the real hurdle, and adoption is where the real value lies.

  • Emerging Governance and Regulatory Standards: Regulators and industry organizations like MISMO are actively setting standards and building frameworks for AI oversight in lending. Lenders are increasingly turning to structured frameworks to manage risk, evaluate vendors, and demonstrate compliance.

  • Human Oversight & Decision-Making Drives Real Change: Tools can be designed to advise and streamline processes and workflows, or surface recommendations to the user, but decision-making authority should remain with the human experts. Maintaining clear human review and override controls is essential for regulatory compliance and  for lasting transformation.

  • Empowerment with Guardrails: Enabling teams to build their own assistants, but with oversight and the right guardrails in place, will help foster and encourage curiosity, innovation, and adoption.

In Summary

While integrating AI across mortgage operations brings significant operational shifts, it also creates new unprecedented opportunities for lenders equipped with the right strategy, governance, change management, and technology partners. Organizations that prioritize user adoption, align with regulatory frameworks like FRAME, and maintain meaningful human oversight, will drive measurable value and sustainable growth in an ever-evolving market.

One message that stayed with us came from Zach Kass, who ended his opening keynote with the words “being optimistic isn't naive. It's a responsibility.”
